Lesson 2 of 4
Risk and Issue Response Strategies
Apply practical response options for threats, opportunities, and active issues while preserving project objectives.
Response Strategy Principles
The best response is proportional, timely, and owned. Exam scenarios reward managers who avoid both panic and passivity. For risks, choose a strategy before impact occurs; for issues, stabilize operations first, then solve root causes. Both need explicit ownership and follow-up.
Threat, Opportunity, and Issue Responses
Threat / Negative Risk
- Reduce probability or impact
- Shift exposure through contract or design choices
- Prepare contingency triggers
Opportunity / Positive Risk
- Increase probability of benefit
- Invest to accelerate upside realization
- Share opportunity with capable partners
Issue Response Priorities
- Contain immediate damage to scope, quality, or operations.
- Communicate impact transparently to decision makers.
- Assign a clear owner and recovery timeline.
- Address root cause, not only symptoms.
- Capture lessons to prevent recurrence.
From Detection to Stabilization
- 1Confirm severity and exposure quickly.
- 2Select and execute the preplanned response when available.
- 3Escalate when authority or resources are insufficient.
- 4Track residual exposure after response actions.
- 5Reassess delivery plans and commitments.
Exam Logic
Strong answers show analysis plus action. Avoid choices that jump straight to governance paperwork when immediate containment or team coordination is still missing.
PMP Decode Rule
Respond in proportion to impact and urgency.
