Lesson 1 of 3
Identifying and Prioritizing Stakeholders
Learn how to classify stakeholder influence and impact so engagement effort is focused where exam scenarios expect it.
PMP Decode is an independent training product and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Project Management Institute, Inc. Stakeholder guidance here is original exam-prep instruction.
Why Prioritization Matters
Not every stakeholder needs the same cadence or depth of involvement. Exam scenarios often test whether you can distinguish high influence from high interest and engage each appropriately. Strong answers target the right people with the right strategy before conflict escalates.
Signals of Stakeholders Needing Close Attention
- Can approve, block, or redirect scope decisions.
- Control resources needed for delivery continuity.
- Represent user groups with high adoption impact.
- Show signs of emerging resistance or trust erosion.
Stakeholder Prioritization Routine
- 1Identify decision authority and influence networks.
- 2Assess impact of each stakeholder on value delivery.
- 3Define preferred communication style and frequency.
- 4Create targeted engagement actions for high-risk relationships.
A broad project-wide email is rarely enough for a tense stakeholder issue. The exam rewards focused, relationship-specific engagement.
Engagement starts with accurate influence mapping, not generic communication volume.
