Timing Words Change the Correct Answer

The PMP exam frequently asks what you should do first or next. Candidates lose points by selecting a good long-term action that skips an immediate prerequisite—such as talking to the team before escalating, or gathering facts before committing to a date. Read the question stem twice for timing language before reading choices.

Timing Words and What They Usually Require

• First / initially: stabilize people or facts before major process moves.
• Next: the logical follow-on after the situation described in the stem.
• Immediately: urgent harm reduction—not necessarily the full permanent fix.
• Before: a prerequisite action that must precede the main decision.
• Best / most appropriate: holistic judgment after context is established.
• Should have been done earlier: identify the missed proactive step.

First-vs-Next Decision Framework

1. 1If safety, compliance, or severe stakeholder harm is present, address containment first.
2. 2If facts are unclear, clarify with the right people before committing resources.
3. 3If relationships are fractured, re-establish communication before process changes.
4. 4If governance is required, initiate the correct path without skipping notification.
5. 5If the stem is agile, protect iteration goals while planning the proper backlog move.
