Development Approach & Life Cycle

Lesson 4 of 6

Reading Approach Cues in Stems

Build fast recognition of life-cycle cues so your answer logic aligns with the delivery environment in each question.

Cue-First Reading Discipline

Many misses come from solving the right problem with the wrong method. If a stem signals formal governance, your answer must reflect structured control. If it signals iterative delivery, your answer must reflect feedback loops and collaborative prioritization. Method alignment is often the deciding factor between two plausible answers.

Cue Vocabulary to Watch

  • Predictive: baseline, approval board, phase gate, signed scope, CCB, EVA.
  • Agile: sprint, backlog, velocity, iteration review, product owner, DoD.
  • Hybrid: release gate plus iteration, fixed date with evolving features, stage-gate with agile team.
  • Authority cues: who can approve, who prioritizes, who accepts deliverables.

Rapid Cue Mapping Routine

  1. 1Underline one phrase showing delivery model (predictive, agile, hybrid).
  2. 2Underline one phrase showing decision authority (sponsor, PO, CCB, team).
  3. 3Underline one phrase showing timing pressure (regulatory, contract, sprint end).
  4. 4Eliminate options that contradict any of the three signals.
  5. 5Compare remaining options for value and relationship impact.

Same Problem, Wrong Method

Agile Context — Wrong Answer

  • Submit a formal change request for a minor backlog reprioritization.
  • Freeze the team plan for six weeks during discovery.

Predictive Context — Wrong Answer

  • Add scope to the sprint without impact analysis or approval.
  • Rebaseline the schedule informally after a major risk event.
Exam Advantage

When you map approach cues in the first 15 seconds, you eliminate one or two distractors immediately and reserve cognitive energy for harder judgment calls.

PMP Decode Rule

Method cues determine action sequence before option comparison begins.
